
The Queen Takes a Break: Why Your Bees Go Quiet in June

It happens every year, right around the time you'd expect things to be in full glorious swing. The garden is green, the sun is (occasionally, this being England) shining, and you'd think our bees would be absolutely beside themselves with excitement. Instead, if you lean in close to our hives here on Camlet Way and really pay attention, you might notice something subtle but extraordinary: the colony is pulling back. The queen has slowed down. Fewer eggs. Fewer larvae. A quieter hive.
Don't panic. This is one of nature's most elegant little tricks — and it's called the June Gap.
What on Earth is the June Gap?
The June Gap is a curious seasonal lull that catches many beekeepers off guard. Here in the UK, spring flowers — your hawthorn, dandelion, fruit tree blossom, and oilseed rape — put on a spectacular show through April and May, keeping our foragers gloriously busy. The hedgerows along Hadley Wood and the gardens up and down Barnet are buzzing with purpose.
But then, somewhere around late May and into June, those early bloomers fade. The summer flowers — lime trees, clover, bramble, rosebay willowherb — haven't quite kicked in yet. There's a gap. A floral gap. The landscape, to a bee's eye, briefly goes from a well-stocked supermarket to a corner shop with half-empty shelves.
The Science of Sensing Less
Here's where it gets genuinely wonderful. You might assume a bee colony just carries on regardless, blissfully unaware of the lean times ahead. But honeybees are nothing of the sort. A hive of 60,000-plus individuals operates like a single, breathing superorganism — and it is astonishingly good at reading the state of the world around it.
As nectar income drops, scout bees returning to the hive have less to report. Foragers bring back smaller loads. The collective pulse of the colony — measured in vibrations, pheromones, and the sheer economics of what's being stored — begins to shift. Worker bees, acting as living sensors, start reducing the amount of a substance called royal jelly fed to the queen.
Royal jelly is a protein-rich secretion produced by young nurse bees, and for the queen, it is everything. It's what keeps her laying at her remarkable peak rate of up to 2,000 eggs a day. When royal jelly rations are reduced, the queen's laying slows — sometimes dramatically. The colony is essentially saying, very politely but very firmly: Your Majesty, we think you should take a little rest.
This is what beekeepers mean when they say the bees have taken the queen off lay.
Why Would They Do This? It Sounds Counterintuitive.
At first glance, reducing the population during a food shortage sounds like exactly the wrong strategy. But consider the maths. Every single bee larva needs to be kept warm, fed, and tended. At peak spring build-up, the colony has been expanding furiously to capitalise on the spring flush of nectar. But raising brood is expensive — it costs warmth, energy, and precious stores. If the flowers aren't there to justify the outlay, maintaining a full nursery is simply wasteful.
By slowing reproduction during the June Gap, the bees reduce the mouth count needing fed from existing stores, free up nurse bees from brood-rearing duties to become foragers instead, and conserve enough reserves to survive the lull and be in rude health when the summer flow begins. It's colony-level financial planning. The bees aren't panicking. They're budgeting.
A Conversation Happening in Chemicals
What makes this even more astonishing is how this information spreads through the hive. There's no committee meeting. No memo. The colony communicates through an extraordinary cocktail of chemical signals called pheromones.
One of the most important is queen substance (technically, trans-9-oxodec-2-enoic acid, if you want to impress someone at a dinner party). This pheromone, produced by the queen and passed mouth-to-mouth through the colony in a process called trophallaxis, essentially tells every worker: The queen is here, she is healthy, all is well.
When nectar income drops and colony stress rises, this chemical messaging system begins to subtly shift. Nurse bees respond by altering their royal jelly secretions. The queen's output drops. The whole process is less like a decision and more like a thermostat — an automatic, colony-wide biological response to environmental conditions.
No brain is in charge. Sixty thousand tiny creatures, responding to chemistry and circumstance, produce a collective wisdom that has kept Apis mellifera thriving for millions of years.
What This Means for Our Honey

A colony that has been allowed to manage itself naturally, that hasn't been pushed for maximum yield at all costs, is a resilient colony — one that will be vibrant, healthy, and ready when the lime trees and brambles finally burst into flower and summer proper begins.
The June Gap is also one reason our honey genuinely changes with the seasons. The summer harvest, when it comes, carries the flavour of that particular year's forage — the clover in the verges, the bramble along the Camlet Way hedges, the garden flowers visited by our girls on warm July afternoons. You can't rush it. The bees won't let you.
The Wonder of It All
Think about this for a moment. Without a single conscious thought, tens of thousands of small creatures — each with a brain smaller than a sesame seed — collectively sense the state of the landscape around them, calculate their own resource requirements, and adjust the behaviour of their queen accordingly. They do this through chemistry, vibration, and touch. They do it seamlessly, instinctively, and brilliantly.
There's a queen sitting in our hive right now who has been taking slightly longer breaks between egg batches, guided by the gentle, chemical nudges of the workers around her. She doesn't know it's June. She doesn't know there's a gap. She only knows what her colony tells her.
And her colony knows a great deal more than we sometimes give it credit for.
